What came to my mind was a thesis advanced 30 years ago by Merrill Peterson in The Jefferson Image in the American Mind. Peterson discovered that Jefferson had become America's Everyman, the cult hero for wildly divergent and often antagonistic political movements throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Thus, Peterson’s thesis in The Jefferson Image in the American Mind is about “what history made of Thomas Jefferson”—a critique of “biographies” of Jefferson. Where Peterson left off.

The symbolizing, the image-mongering, and the identifying of Jefferson with America has not changed a bit since Peterson's book was published, even though the level of professional historical scholarship has never been higher. If anything the association of Jefferson with America has become more complete. Peterson's invaluable work The Jefferson Image in the American Mind was published in By now a successor volume, covering the last decades of the twentieth century, is badly : Conor Cruise O'brien.

Jefferson’s Expression of the American Mind the Rights of the Commons of England,” Jefferson carefully and systematically set down in this remarkable commonplace book of parliamentary law such still apposite affirmations as this one from the seventeenth century: that the audience Jefferson had in mind was in fact made up of his.
